Why I’m Looking at Oxidative Stress From the Inside AND Out
After more than two decades in the aesthetics industry and knowing a lot about antioxidants, one thing has become increasingly clear to me:
Beautiful skin isn’t just about what we put on our skin. It’s also about what is happening within our cells.
That is why I was so excited to see the launch of the new Eminence Organic Skin Care Vitamin C⁺ Serum.
Yes, it is a beautiful topical formula designed to visibly brighten, firm and refine the skin. But what really caught my attention was the science behind the ingredients—particularly the focus on antioxidants, environmental stress and glutathione.
Because those words point to a much bigger conversation I have been having with my clients for years:
oxidative stress.
What Exactly Is Oxidative Stress?
Every day, our bodies and our skin are exposed to stressors—from UV exposure and pollution to normal metabolism and other environmental factors.
These processes can generate reactive molecules commonly called free radicals. Our bodies have sophisticated antioxidant defense systems to help maintain balance. When the production of oxidants overwhelms those defenses, we call that oxidative stress.
And our skin is certainly not immune.
Research has established oxidative stress as an important part of the biology of skin aging and environmental damage. This is one reason antioxidants have become such an important part of modern skincare.
But here is where the conversation gets really interesting:
What if we support antioxidant defense from both the outside and the inside?
Enter Eminence Vitamin C⁺ Serum
The new Vitamin C⁺ Serum from Eminence combines several ingredients that immediately caught my attention:
3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid — a stable, dual-soluble vitamin C derivative designed to visibly brighten the skin and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Cloudberry — naturally rich in antioxidant compounds that help defend the appearance of skin against environmental stressors.
Mulberry — rich in polyphenols and used to help visibly improve the appearance of dark spots and uneven tone.
And then there is one of the ingredients I find most fascinating:
Glutathione.
Eminence describes glutathione as a naturally occurring, multifunctional antioxidant. In this formula, it is used to help visibly reduce the appearance of dark spots and uneven skin tone.
The results from Eminence are impressive as well: 95% of participants agreed that their skin texture appeared smoother and more refined after 28 days, while 90% showed improvement in overall skin brightness after three months of twice-daily use.
But glutathione is where the topical skincare conversation connects beautifully with a much larger conversation about cellular health.
Why Glutathione Matters
Glutathione is one of the body’s important endogenous antioxidants—meaning it is something our bodies naturally produce.
Think about that distinction for a moment.
We often think about antioxidants as something we consume or apply: vitamin C, antioxidant-rich foods, serums and supplements.
But our cells also possess their own sophisticated antioxidant defense systems.
And one of the key regulatory pathways involved in those defenses is called Nrf2.
Research in skin models has demonstrated an important relationship between Nrf2 signaling and glutathione production. When Nrf2 is activated, it can influence genes involved in the body’s antioxidant defenses, including pathways associated with glutathione.
This is one of the reasons I believe the future of beauty is going to involve a much deeper understanding of cellular health.
The Inside-Out Connection: Protandim Nrf2 Synergizer
This is where Protandim® Nrf2 Synergizer® fits so beautifully into my philosophy of skin health.
Protandim is not a topical skincare product, and it is not simply another antioxidant that you apply to the skin.
It is a patented combination of five botanical ingredients formulated to target the body’s Nrf2 pathway.
According to LifeVantage, Protandim Nrf2 Synergizer supports the body’s own antioxidant defenses through Nrf2 activation. LifeVantage also reports that a human clinical study demonstrated an average 40% reduction in a marker of oxidative stress after 30 days.
That distinction is important to me.
Instead of thinking only about adding antioxidants from the outside, we can also talk about supporting the systems our bodies already possess.
That is activation.
Topical Antioxidants + Cellular Activation
This is where my worlds as a holistic aesthetician and wellness educator come together.
I don’t believe beautiful skin should be approached exclusively from the outside.
And I don’t believe internal wellness means we stop using exceptional topical skincare.
We do both.
With the Vitamin C⁺ Serum, we are giving the skin a sophisticated topical antioxidant formula featuring stabilized vitamin C, cloudberry and glutathione.
With Protandim Nrf2 Synergizer, we are taking a completely different approach—supporting the body’s Nrf2 pathway and its endogenous antioxidant defenses from within.
They aren’t the same product.
They haven’t been clinically studied as a combination.
But they represent two complementary concepts that I believe are incredibly important:
protect the skin externally + support cellular antioxidant defenses internally.
That is what inside-out beauty means to me.
Why This Matters More As We Age
For years, the beauty industry taught us to focus almost exclusively on the surface:
Exfoliate more. Correct the pigment. Treat the wrinkle. Add another serum.
Those things can absolutely have value.
But after working with skin for more than 20 years, my philosophy has evolved.
I want to ask a different question:
What is happening at the cellular level that ultimately influences what we see in the mirror?
Skin is living tissue. It responds to our environment, lifestyle, nutrition, UV exposure, inflammation, hormones and oxidative stress.
So rather than chasing every visible sign of aging individually, I believe in creating an environment that supports healthy-looking skin as a whole.
That means excellent topical skincare.
It also means looking beyond the skin.
My New Antioxidant Ritual
For clients who want to take a more comprehensive approach to healthy aging and radiant skin, these are two products I am especially excited about right now:
OUTSIDE: Eminence Organic Skin Care Vitamin C⁺ Serum
Apply 1–3 pumps to cleansed skin once or twice daily, followed by moisturizer. During the day, always finish with SPF.
INSIDE: Protandim Nrf2 Synergizer
One caplet daily with food, according to LifeVantage’s directions.
One supports the appearance of the skin directly.
The other supports the body’s internal antioxidant defense pathways.
And together, they represent the philosophy behind everything I do at Activated Beauty & Wellness:
Beautiful skin begins with understanding the biology behind it.
Not simply covering aging.
Not chasing every new trend.
But supporting the skin AND the body … in a more intelligent, holistic way.
That is activated beauty.
